His work bridges student affairs, leadership development, academic success, and organizational strategy, with a focus on building student-centered systems that foster growth, belonging, and achievement.
As Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Graduate & Professional Student Initiatives at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Cortez leads initiatives that support graduate and professional students through advocacy, leadership development, crisis response, and strategic programming. Throughout his career, he has developed innovative student success initiatives, designed leadership curricula, implemented campus-wide programs, and partnered with faculty and administrators to improve the student experience.
In addition to his institutional leadership, Dr. Cortez provides consulting services to students, educators, and organizations. His areas of expertise include academic advising, leadership coaching, graduate and professional student success, student affairs strategy, career development, interview preparation, resume and personal statement review, and organizational leadership. He is known for translating complex challenges into practical, actionable solutions while empowering individuals to achieve their personal and professional goals.
Dr. Cortez earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University. His research explores leadership identity development, emotional intelligence, and the experiences of graduate and professional students. He is a frequent presenter on leadership, higher education, and student success and is passionate about helping individuals lead with confidence, authenticity, and purpose.
